- Check from ground level to see if there is any visible damage. Even if you can’t see anything, it’s still a good idea to have a local roofing contractor take a look.
- If you do see visible damage, cover the damaged area (if possible) with a tarp to shield the exposed sheathing and insulation from moisture.
- Have your roofing contractor provide an estimate of damage to the roof to give to your homeowner’s insurance agent or better yet, have your contractor meet with your insurance adjuster to show them where the damage is.
- Do make sure your contractor is licensed and insured before starting any work. It is also important when dealing with storm damage to ensure your contractor is local and not just a fly-by-night storm chaser who won’t be around to honor any warranties.
- Doing the repair yourself generally voids any existing roof warranties
- Falling off a roof hurts
- The repair may be more complex than you realize and you might just end up making the damage worse
- The difference in cost between hiring a professional and doing the work yourself is less than you may think (don’t forget all the time you would be putting into a project you may know little about)
