Toledo-based Arnold’s Home Improvement has teamed up with the Toledo Mud Hens, Modern Builders Supply and Atlas Roofing Corporation to offer one lucky and deserving family a brand-new roof as part of the Arnold’s Home Improvement “Ugly Roof Project.” Owner and lifelong Toledo resident Jason Arnold decided several years ago to launch a contest where area families could submit pictures and a short essay explaining why they were in need of a helping hand. In this case, a whole company of helping hands to tear off their old, leaking worn-out roof and install a brand-new Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System at no cost to the homeowner. The Atlas shingles chosen for the roof, manufactured locally in Ohio, include Scotchgard™ Protector by 3M to protect against ugly black streaks and stains caused by algae on a roof.
It was a very close race! Dave and Alison Alfred won our contest with 3,787 votes.
Read Alison’s compelling essay entry: “I am the only one working in our family because my husband is disabled and has Stage 4 Cancer. I have been trying to pay our regular bills and my husband’s cancer treatment bills along with his doctor bills and his pharmacy bills. I am trying to stay afloat, but it has been so hard. The roof is leaking in our upstairs which is right over my husband’s bedroom. This is not good for a person with cancer. I am trying to keep up with my own health, but I have not been able to do this because of my husband’s cancer. As you see my house is a mess and I just want to make the home healthy to live in for my husband and I. Please pick us...I can’t afford to get a new roof, pay my regular bills, buy food and pay my husband’s cancer treatment bills. Thanks!”
“We announced our Top 10 finalists, and we let the public decide the winner by voting on our Facebook page, where their photos and essays were posted. We had some very, very compelling stories of people who were in dire need of a new roof. Some of the stories brought tears to our eyes,” Arnold stated.
“When we say free, we mean free,” Arnold explained. “We are providing everything, from the tear-off and disposal of their old roof to installing a premium Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System, which includes the very best products in the industry, with a limited lifetime warranty on materials and a 10-year workmanship warranty, all at no cost to them.”
“We believe in our local community,” Jason continued, “and in giving back. The reason we have been in business for over 28 years is because of the support we’ve received from our community. What better way to give back than to do this for an area family that’s in need, while teaming up with our beloved Mud Hens and Atlas? I have lived in Toledo all my life, and it is important to me to better my community in whatever way I can.”
This is not the first time Arnold’s Home Improvement has embarked on such a significant endeavor to drastically change and enhance a family’s life for free. Six years ago, Jason created and spearheaded what is known as The Garcia Project. Arnold’s Home Improvement took the lead and recruited several other local contractors to participate in building a brand-new addition onto the back of the house of a local family with triplets, two of whom have cerebral palsy. Jason also sponsors a yearly 12,000 Home Improvement giveaway as well as one of our favorite annual programs, the Veterans Roof Project. He has also teamed up with Mom’s House and Channel 13’s Hope for the Holidays program.
